Awesome tools for a motion designer's workflow

Meggs' History of Graphic Design

This is a classic design history textbook with great motion graphics and design inspiration. I loved learning about past design movements, and this made me observe design around me in a different light.

Wacom Tablet

A good graphic tablet makes all the difference for a motion design artist, especially when making complex storyboards and styleframes.

Sketchbook

Every motion design artist should have a sketchbook handy to brainstorm or sketch ideas before jumping onto the computer :)

Master Composition And Communicate Effectively

When you learn motion graphics, you hear all the time that you need to master composition to communicate your message, but what does that actually mean in practice? My motion graphics tutorials aim to explain the principle to you in terms you can actually understand.

As a motion design artist, you need to communicate your message effectively – that’s a given. But how are you going to do it? Most motion tutorials will just tell you that you need to master the art of composition, but the explanations they give you are often so complicated that it’s virtually impossible to work out how to put the principle into practice. Luckily, I’m here to help.
These motion graphics tutorials are designed to explain composition’s key principles in such a way that you can understand what to do when you’re creating your next project. By putting these concepts into practice, you’ll find it much easier to communicate your message effectively to your target audience.
What does good composition look like?
Effective composition tells a story through subtext. Great, so how do you do that exactly? It all starts by drawing the eye to the chosen spot. Tonal contrasts, hard and sharp edges, intersecting lines, a human gaze, using bright, warm colours… all attract attention for the right reasons. Once you’ve established focus, the next step is to place elements in the video using the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio. Artists have been using these principles for centuries in their masterpieces, and the great masters can’t be wrong!

STYLEFRAMES FOR MOTION DESIGN

You’ll have heard the old adage “failing to plan is planning to fail…” The same holds true for design. Design is all about planning. Planning a project is a key element in the process of producing motion design, and that’s where styleframes come into play.
